I've been a scientist now for 13 years, and I really want a career change. One of my ideas for a possible career change is to study 3D animation. I still love stop motion animation, but 3D is so popular and everyone is doing it. The plan is to go to New York Film Academy (NYFA) for their 1 year conservatory program in 3D animation in Sept 2014, then look for a job. I talked to 6 people regarding jobs, schools, direction, animation, software, etc; two of them are my friends that have animation experience, 1 from Dreamworks, 1 that owns his own 3D animation studio, 1 is an alumni from NYFA, and finally the Chair of the animation department of NYFA. Most of them say the same thing, it's all about you: What you put in, will decide on your chances of getting a job. I also bought pirated 3D animation software (Maya and Zbrush) and e-books on careers and software in animation. Lastly, I am learning on line through Lynda.com. I have done my homework.
But why m I still hesitant to enroll? A career in animation is not a lucrative career path and it involves long hours. It is also very competitive, expensive, and time consuming. After the 1 year of schooling, m I going to be able to get a job? Do I have to start freelancing? There are so many unanswered questions and I feel it is high risk, low rewards scenario. Should I go through this avenue? Or should I think about some other career path? I've always loved movies, character design, modeling etc. It's been my dream job to work on an animated feature. What should I do? Until then here are a couple of photos from Maya and Zbrush!

God, I love Lori Nix! Photographer and builder of dioramas! She has several series going on, in which she builds everything by hand, then photographs them. One of her works, entitled The City, is about a post apocalyptic city that is filled with insects, flora and fauna after the abandonment of people. Her dioramas range from 20 inches to 6 feet long and take months to build. It also takes her weeks to photograph them. Check out my favorite pictures below. You can also buy her book on Amazon.
