This is my first animated 2 second short! After Voltaire gave me a tutorial on overlapping, I attempted to animate Pepper's (my model's name) arms to mimic flying like a bird or Natalie Portman's perfomance in her movie, Black Swan. The part when she is running around with her arms everywhere, acting like a crazy bird who is about to die! The arms look good on the way up, but on the way down, I need to overlap more and exaggerate the hands. Prepare to Take Two! ps. I noticed you can only watch this video once, I have to try to fix this problem, so you can watch it over and over again, like me. I suggest you reload the page to watch it again..

This is one of my classmates, Alessandra and her vampire puppet. His name is Yogi, he's a vampire that does yoga! To the right is her little, cute story board (which I need to do!). So her story is, that Yogi wants to do the sun salutation to the sun when it comes up. But since he is a vampire, he can't, and will disappear instead! OH NO! Don't do it Yogi! We want you around!
Jeremy briefly told the class about this stop motion animator, named Barry Purves. Upon Googling him, I saw he had a book called of course: stop-motion. So I got it from Amazon, and started reading. Pretty good so far. Very broad information and there are so many little stop motion shorts I never heard of. For example there is one called Balance which is interesting, its about 5 guys on a balance, that discover something...
I started taking a sewing class at the Sewing Studio on 29th Street in the city. Its a cute studio with pink curtains and chandelier decals on the walls. I really like my teacher, Ashlee. She seems very patient and has a lot of knowledge when it comes to sewing, techniques, tools etc. Here is a picture of a stay and baste sewing exercise I did. I will make little clothes for my little puppets! I don't want to sew by hand, its killing my eyes and back! But so is everything else, I'm never going to win! :(
On Tuesday evening, only 3 people showed up to my stop motion class, including me! (There are normally 8 students) WTF people? Where are you? So I asked Voltaire, when we were going to start animating, because we only have 4 weeks left, including tonight. We haven't animated at all. We all have been working on our damn puppets! But I am done! He asked are you ready, and I answered YES! So he told me where to get the equipment. Since I didn't have my laptop, I had to do it the old fashion way: get a lunchbox! WTF is a lunchbox? It's a small box shaped like you guessed it, a lunchbox! It is a frame grabber capable of recording individual frames, and playing it back on a monitor. So we have: a huge, old video camera on a tripod connected to the lunchbox, which is connected to a huge, old gray computer monitor. (See above pictures. That's what they looked like!) I set up my puppet and then you have to take a frame by pressing the black button on the left with a camera on it. Move your puppet, take a frame, move your puppet, take a frame. Repeat about 138 times. Then you can watch it on the monitor, by pressing the Play button on the lunchbox. Of course this was my first time with this archaic equipment, but I made the best of it! Too bad I couldn't record my first little 4 second short on a USB. The lunchbox didn't have an outlet for a USB, since it's so fucking old! Voltaire said there was a way to do it, but I'm sure I'll just bring my laptop next week.
After updating my favorite page, I noticed there were no stop motion female animators! I was destined to find one. So I found Suzie Templeton. A writer, director and animator from England. She directed Peter and the Wolf, which she won an Oscar in 2007 for best animated short film. This movie incorporates music to narrate the story, which is great! It does have some digital aspects to it, but I feel it's ok to use all types of media. I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with me. I really like the animation, but didn't like the ending. I was conflicted with it. It's on Netflix streaming, if you want to watch it.
This is my photo from the Tim Burton exhibit at the MOMA in 2010. I went for my birthday! It's my bf standing in front of this huge balloon, of one of Tim Burton's creatures. We couldn't take any photos of his collection, except this one in the atrium. But he had lots of puppets, models, drawings, sculptures, and one of a kind pieces at the MOMA. It was pretty wild!
Last month, I got to see the Brothers Quay at the MOMA. They were there for their opening premiere: Through the Looking Glass. It's a documentary about the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia. It was mostly photos of artifacts and their medical collection. I took a quick photo of them talking. They were soft spoken and finished each others sentences.
Hello! Thanks for reading. Today is my first day of my new website: PMS.
Photography, Music, Science. I am going to include photos by the end of this week, documenting the progress. Right now, I only have one photo up of the mom, (who is not ready) about to give birth to a camera, a guitar and a beaker. It's going to be pretty weird. Stay tuned... |
My short blog topics include: photography, music, science, crafts, vacation photos, movies, events in NYC, and of course stop motion animation.
