Yesterday my buddy Sam and I went to the David Zwiner Gallery for Yayoi Kusama's Festival of Life exhibit. We got there at 9 am, and was inside by 10:45. Standing in line went by quick since Sam and I were laughing and chatting the whole time. Next time I have to bring my hot hand warmer pouches, it was a tad chilly! You only had 1 MINUTE to look at this exhibit! I waited in line for almost 2 hours, and I got to hear the staff member say "You only have 30 more seconds, now 5 seconds, now 2 seconds" while viewing the exhibit! It was annoying and him talking ruined my experience. But Sam and I still had fun and it was pretty beautiful to see the mirrors, silver orbs, and our images infinitely displaying before our eyes. You only get 30 SECONDS to see this exhibit due to long lines. It was a box full of blinking lights portraying an infinite universe. Another staff member said, "Please move along, for the next group!" I didn't like that either! The Last room called "With All My Love for the Tulips, I Pray Forever” was filled with red polka dots and had 3 flower sculptures. In this room we had about 3 minutes but was still ushered away before the next group arrived. I couldn't really experience anything except selfies in this room because of the time constraint. I wish we could explore more of her work without people telling us to leave. It was nice to be immersed in her world if only for a brief period of time. Her paintings (66 paintings total) in the next door gallery were full of color, patterns, eyes, and faces I could identify with for some reason. In this gallery we took our time (finally no one telling us to leave!) to inspect Kusama's paintings. I could finally get a sense of her work and world in this gallery, which was great to experience. Her paintings remind me of organisms, and creatures in a vivid world full of meaning and wonder. I also loved that all the canvases were the same size, displaying an organized, symmetric exhibit. We headed uptown to Times Square to visit the Line Friends store. I first heard about Line Friends browsing through sticker characters on my phone. The teddy bear is named Brown and he has several friends. Cony is the rabbit and Brown's wife! Sally is the female chick and is Brown's tag along buddy. You can check out their YouTube channel here.
