I've been watching Oddities on Netflix lately, so I decided to visit Obscura on Ave A. I really didn't do too much snooping since I was with my fiance and I didn't want him to wait too long, but I did see a doll or robot figure that I liked.
I asked the annoying, pretentious asshole behind the register how much it was and he said $300. I said oh cool, then he decides to tell me a little more about it and said it was from Michael Sullivan and he does stop motion. I said yeah, I was thinking about that too. He replies, yeah you should do some research on him. So I am doing it now. I guess I wasn't too annoyed, but when you want to sell things, maybe you shouldn't degrade the customer. Whatevs, so Michael Sullivan worked on sets and puppets for projects such as Star Trek V and Joe's Apartment. He also has one of his installations at The Museum of Sex. Now he is doing his own film, The Sex Life of Robots. I found out what goes into the $300 doll. It's actually a Barbie Doll with the hair cut off, a clay helmet, holes and painted dirty grey, with black enamel. THAT'S IT! But I am sure it takes some time etc.. There's also a documentary called Meaning of Robots, directed by Matt Lenski, which Mr. Sullivan is in!
