Today Matt and I went to the Musee Mecanique in San Francisco, Pier 45. My friend Penny told me about it and I am glad she did because I really enjoyed it. MM is an antique coin operated musical instrument and mechanical machine museum. There is a sign that says "Please be gentle to the machines, they are older than you and will probably out live you." haha! They are creepy, beautiful and whimsical. Most of the machines cost a quarter and move back and forth or left and right. The musical instruments play piano songs and are able to play different pieces. The owner served in WWII and has over 300 pieces that used to be stored at the Cliff House, but now are housed on the pier.
But my favorite piece is the last photo of the Praxinoscope. Invented by Charles Reynaud in 1877, the praxinoscope is a type of animation machine. It has a strip of pictures along a spinning cylinder or wheel, with a mirror in the middle. The reflections of the pictures would appear to move in the mirror once the wheel is turned. The photo above shows a girl skipping rope. One of the first pieces of animation! Well besides the zoetrope and phenakistoscope.
